Dear Free File Taxpayer:
The IRS has rejected your federal return. This means that your return has not been filed.
Here’s the reason for the rejection:
Error Code 0967: Form 1040/1040A - When Tuition and Fees Deduction of Form 1040/1040A is significant, Form 8917 must be part of the return.
OK, so I’m missing form 8917.
Error Code 0189: On Form 1040, if Total Adjustments (Line 36) has an amount, then at least one of the following lines must have an amount: Form 1040: Lines 23 thru 35 or line 36 write-in.
OK, so I don’t have anything written on lines 23-35.
Error Code 0995: Form 8917 - Tuition and Fees Deduction amount must equal Form 1040 Line 34 or Form 1040A line 19.
OK, so now I DO have something written on line 34, which is part of line 23-35, and I DO have form 8917 after all, it just doesn’t match what is apparently written on the line that the other error message said didn’t have anything written on it.
For the record, form 8917 was there, I did have an amount on line 23-35, and it matched the outcome of form 8917. Stupid free file.
